designing your next chapter

There is something about the middle of summer that always catches me by surprise. The days are long, hot and sometimes so humid that you feel like a wet dishrag! Life seems to slow down just a little as many people go on holiday, children are home from school, and routines sometimes just don’t exist. . It feels as though everything has pressed the pause button.
Yet beneath the surface, something else is happening.
Without us even noticing, the seasons are quietly preparing to change. The leaves haven't started turning yet, and the air still carries the warmth of summer, but before long the mornings will feel a little cooler. (I am counting the days!) The holidays will end. New diaries will open. We will start thinking about the months ahead and, before we know it, we will find ourselves stepping into a new season—both in nature and in life.
Upon reflection, this reminds me that our lives move through seasons too.
There are seasons when we build careers and raise children. Seasons of caring for ageing parents, supporting partners, or putting everyone else's needs before our own. And then, often without warning, we find ourselves standing at the edge of a different season altogether.
I remember sitting around the family dinner table one evening, listening to my grown children talking about work, investments, holidays and the everyday decisions of adult life. They laughed together, shared ideas, and planned their futures.
As I listened, a thought quietly crept into my mind.
They don't need me in the same way anymore.
It wasn't sadness exactly. It was something harder to define. For years, so much of my identity had been wrapped up in being needed. If that chapter was changing, what did the next one look like?
The answer didn't appear overnight.
Like the changing seasons, it happened gradually.
I began asking different questions. What excited me? What had I put aside while I was busy looking after everyone else? What dreams had been patiently waiting for me to notice them again?
Slowly, I realised I wasn't losing my purpose. I was actually being invited to discover a new one. That is what designing your next chapter is really about. It isn't about becoming someone different. It isn't about pretending the past didn't happen or making any dramatic changes overnight. It's simply about recognising that every season has its own beauty and its own opportunities.
Just as a garden isn't expected to bloom all year round, neither are we. Some seasons are for planting. Others are for growing. Others are for resting, reflecting and preparing for what comes next.
Many of the women I coach tell me they feel as though they're standing in between chapters. Their children have grown up, retirement is approaching—or has already arrived—and they find themselves asking, "What about me now?"
My answer is always the same.
"What if this isn't the end of your story? What if it's simply the beginning of a brand-new chapter?"
The changing of the seasons reminds us that nothing stays the same forever. Change isn't something to fear; it's definitely something to embrace. Every new season offers us the chance to begin again, to rediscover parts of ourselves that may have been waiting quietly in the background for years.
As summer slowly gives way to autumn and we begin thinking about fresh starts and new possibilities, perhaps this is the perfect time to ask yourself:
If I could intentionally design the next chapter of my life, what would I want it to look like?
You don't need to have all the answers today.
You simply need the courage to believe that there is another season waiting for you.
That is exactly what we'll be exploring in my upcoming Designing Your Next Chapter workshop. Together we'll create the space to reflect on where you've been, celebrate how far you've come, and gently begin designing a future that feels exciting, meaningful and true to who you are today.
The seasons remind us that change is not something to resist—it is part of life itself. Every tree lets go of its leaves trusting that new growth will come. Every garden rests before it starts to bloom again.
Perhaps this is your season—not to look back with regret, but rather to look forward with curiosity.
Because your story isn't coming to an end.
It's simply preparing for its most beautiful chapter yet.
Ready to Design Your Next Chapter?
If this story resonated with you, perhaps it's because you're standing at the beginning of a new season yourself.
In September, I'll be hosting Designing Your Next Chapter, an interactive workshop created especially for women 50+ who are ready to move beyond simply getting through each day and start creating a future that feels purposeful, exciting, and fulfilling.
Together we'll explore:
Where you are now and what may be holding you back.
What truly matters to you at this stage of life.
A vision for the next chapter that reflects who you are today.
Practical steps you can begin taking immediately.
You don't need to have everything figured out before you come. You simply need an open mind and a willingness to imagine what's possible.
